Providing a challenging and rich learning environment

Our School Council

Our School Council gives our pupils a voice in the running of the school. Delegates are elected by their peers and every class is represented.

Electing the School Council:

Each year a School Council is elected to represent the views and ideas of the pupils at Kemsley Primary School.

A boy and girl from each class (Year R to Year 6) are represented on the School Council. To be elected, anyone wishing to be included canvases for support and then delivers a speech to their class mates explaining why they should be one of the class representatives. The most popular three choices are then put onto ballot papers and every child in the class is able to vote for the boy and girl they would like to represent their class.

As a council, we then vote in a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson and Secretary in order to run the meetings.

The role of our School Council:

Meetings are held regularly to discuss things that are going well, possible concerns and ways of making our school even better.

If we are running events, we are responsible for organising it (with some help!).

It is the job of the School Council to work with their class mates and teachers to make the school even better than it already is.

Over the past year we have been involved in lots of projects including:

  • Discussing how we can make the playground more attractive and fun at lunchtimes;
  • Helping the teachers to buy lots of benches, playground equipment and toys and then reviewing how good they are;
  • Planning and organising a disco;

Swale Student Council:

We also have two representatives on the Swale Student Council who go to meetings regularly and work with other schools to discuss issues in our area and make suggestions for improvements. Recently we have visited another school to see how it is different from Kemsley and have come back with ideas of things we could improve on.
